Joseph’s N.S. Parent’s Association

   November 2016


Our AGM was held on the 12th October 2016. Our principal, Cait Ui Raghallaigh thanked everyone for coming and the outgoing committee for their remarkable work over the past two years. Special thanks to our outgoing Chairperson Mary Kelleher, Secretary Catherine Gregory-Long and Treasurer Kerry McCarthy for their outstanding work on behalf of St Joseph’s GNS.

A new Committee was then voted in.

Cáit welcomed the newly elected St Joseph’s GNS Parents Association and was delighted to note that there was a parent representing each class in the school and will be a point of contact for the  parents association. Cáit then asked them to organise events such as the Winter Warmers Raffle, Welcome Mornings, Clothing Collections and a Santa Visit.

Dates for your Diaries:

Non Uniform Days – The last Friday of every month will be a non-uniform day  and there will be a nominal charge of €2. A reminder text will be sent out.

Enterprise Town – The parents association have a stand in Sports Centre on Friday 25th Nov from 5.30 pm to 8.30pm in conjunction with 5th Class girls who have their Biz World project on display and will be receiving a certificate from RTE presenter Daithí O’ Shea. There will be a competition for the best Christmas tree decoration and the prize will be a “Tablet” sponsored by Bank of Ireland. Please put your name, school, class & parent contact number on it. All are welcome to this enjoyable event.

Winter Warmer – Tickets for sale have been sent home to each family with prizes of hampers from Drinagh, Fields, trailers of fire wood and the much coveted sellers prize hamper. The raffle will take place in the school on the 8th of December @ 1.30 p.m.

Cake Sale –  Friday 9th December. A raffle of a Christmas themed Cake (Chocolate) made by Laura Collins will take place and the money will be donated to Cork Simon Community on behalf of St Joseph’s GNS. 

Santa Claus Visit to School – Monday 19th Dec Non Uniform Day with a Christmas Theme, no charge

Pop UP Morning in Abbeystrewery  –   18th Feb 2017

Activities in School update:

All classes in the school have participated in golf with Liam Duggan LD Golf and yoga with Frances Hassett and in 2017 we hope to announce speech and drama classes with Karen Coppinger. Students enjoyed the WOW walk to school every Wednesday with teachers Maria Groake,  Geraldine O Hare and parent Rena Hayes, a special thanks to them for organising WOW.

Skibbereen Library Quiz took place on Thursday 27th October and St Josephs was represented by Aoife, Saoirse and Lily from 6th and Mary – Elizabeth from 5th Class. With tutoring from Mr Hickey they were outright winners on the day. They went on to represent Skibbereen Library in the County Hall in Cork on November 8th and came 9th in the county. A massive congratulation from the parents association goes out to them.

5th Class girls took part in a Biz World competition in conjunction with the Bank of Ireland. The winning team will represent the school the Enterprise Town event in The Sports Centre on Friday November 25th.

6th class girls enjoyed a wonderful outing to the West Cork Hotel for Digital Week for the robotics and coding seminar.

Quiz Winners!!!!

We would like to congratulate Saoirse, Aoife & Lily from 6th Class, Ava, Mary- Elizabeth and Ellen M from 5th class who represented the school at the annual Science Quiz in UCC. 56 teams competed in this competition. 5th class came first in their category and 6th class came first in their category and 2nd overall winners.

A note for parents:

 Birthday Party Gift Guidelines

In previous years the Parents Association recommended a guideline where a limit of  €5 be put on birthday presents given by students in the school where the whole class are invited ( particularly in regard to the Junior Side of the school.)

Christmas Presents:   Please be aware Christmas gifts are not necessary for the Staff of St Joseph’s.  Your support and assistance all year is the greatest gift the school could ask for.

Can each parent please contact their class teacher re costumes for the Christmas Plays.

The Parents Association would like to take this opportunity to thank Anton O’Mahony, ex-Mercy Heights for the stage which he kindly donated to St Joseph’s.  The Parent’s Association have sent a Thank You card to Anton, to express our gratitude.
